Photography Blog - our world in still frame

Why a Photography Blog? A blog normally references a weblog or written journal that is frequently updated with subjective written content of interest intended for public consumption. This photography blog is no different. It is content that is updated periodically. It is subjective. The difference is that I replace words with photographs. I take the photographs, mostly in and around Los Angeles, where I've lived since 2001. The photographs represent my reality, my interpretation of the world in which I live. Wherever there is energy or feeling, there is an opportunity for a picture, i.e., dried tannins in a wine glass, a children's slide in a park or the face of a homeless musician in a subway. A girl running down pigeons under the Eiffel Tower humanizes the Tower as protector rather than model, a boy experiencing the fountain bursts of the Salmon Street Springs in Portland, Oregon reminds me of innocence, of the simple things long forgotten. Then, there's the majestic, cliched, larger-than-life and powerfully lit Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel coddled by a reassuring Pacific Ocean sunset.
Photographs like these reflect one momonet in time, a moment that whips by us without recognition. Photographs recapture and replay the moment. What we do with it, well, that's up to us.

Colorado Street Bridge, Pasadena, California
I've passed by this Bridge countless times since moving to Los Angeles and each time I'm reminded of
Paris. Upon closer look, the Beaux Arts arches were the draw. The Colorado Street Bridge was built in
1913 and spans 1,486 feet (453m). It connects Pasadena to the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles. |

Eiffel Tower, Paris , France
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France photographed in April 1999 just months before the
beginning of the new millenium. The Eiffel Tower was constructed between 1887 and 1889. It opened on
May 6, 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair), a celebration marking the
100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It is constructed of iron and is located on the Champs de
Mars on the Right Bank of the River Seine, It is named for its designer, Gustave Eiffel. It's interesting to note
that Gustave Eiffel designed the Tower for the Barcelona World's Fair in 1888 but the Spaniards rejected
it. Eiffel went on to design the armature of the Statue of Liberty. The armature was used to support the
Statue. |

Underground Musicians of the Boston Subway System (MBTA)
All of the musicians were photographed playing in the underground walkways of the Boston Subway System (MBTA). Each has
a unique story. I first thought to photograph them because I am interested in people and their stories. I mostly thought
they were all homeless, on drugs, wayward and trying to make enough money to survive the day. With the exception of Doug,
pictured first, each had a forward-looking story: each was responsible, opportunistic, intelligent, approachable and accommodating.
Doug seemed to arrive each day bundled up with protection against the biting New England Winter, always with a different guitar in hand.
Judging from the glassy indifference in his eyes, Doug seemed high most days. He lived in a homeless shelter, got beat up from time to time,
his guitar stolen in the melees. I remember thinking that he probably traded his guitar du jour for any available substance that would preserve
his body and allow him hope that tomorrow would be a better day. When the next day arrived, so did Doug most of the time with a different guitar
hanging from his shoulder. He was sociable, even more so with the women that traversed the walkway en route to their connecting trains. Doug was
good-looking, sported a pointed goatee, smooth skin and a smile. His glimmer was a knowing one. Most of the people with whom he spoke replied in
kind. Doug didn't have a career plan. Playing under ground in was his way of staying out of the cold and surviving another day. |

Robert sports long dirty blonde straight hair and plays in the underground because his apartment mates and
neightbors complain that his music is too loud. Where Doug played non-electric guitars, mostly acoustic guitars, Robert played the electric
guitar. Not as sociable as Doug, Robert was still pleasant and relished the time he spent, uninterrupted, jamming out blues chords.
He would talk as he played focused on our conversation whereas Doug would be looking for the next beautiful woman to enter his view. Robert's
focus though was undoubtedly practicing the songs he wrote himself and the songs he needed to learn before band practice that week. Like Doug,
Robert accepted donations but, unlike Doug, he was not homeless. He had another job, went to school and paid his own apartment rental fees each month. |

Musicians on rue Mouffetard, Paris 2001
The French word mouffetard translates to skunk in English. Why is a street in the romantic city of Paris
named after a foul smelling animal? rue Mouffetard is similar to Haymarket in downtown Boston. The food
markets all sell their goods outside in the open air: produce, meats, skinned animals, chicken, cheese, and so on.
Today, all trash debris left on the street from the day is cleaned and hosed down. However, years ago, such sanitary measures
were not taken. Food remains were not washed away and the debris was left to rot in the open air. |
